Internet Discussion Groups (Listserves)

A good source for information on various aspects of deafness are several discussion groups on the Internet: Listed below are several discussion groups with brief descriptions and instructions on how to join them by sending an e-mail message: For all these, the "subscribe" goes in the body of the message, with nothing on the "Subject" line.

This discussion group focuses on topics related to the auditory-verbal therapy approach for deaf children. It has several auditory-verbal professionals who participate and who are very willing to answer any questions, including two of the tops in the field - Judith Simser and Pam Talbot

This discussion group is of special interest to parents of children who've had a cochlear implant and to parents considering a cochlear implant for their child. A few professionals from some of the implant centers participate in the list.

This discussion group, sponsored by the American Society for Deaf Children, covers a wide variety of topics. The list has a greater number of participants who are using sign with their deaf children than the number of participants who are using oral approaches, and there are numerous heated discussions on this list. However, there are sometimes gems that make it worthwhile. It also has several oral deaf adults and several signing deaf adults who participate.

This discussion group is heavily oriented towards Deaf Culture and has numerous signing deaf adults who are very critical of oral approaches to deaf education.

This discussion group includes many deaf adults with implants and covers many topics related to cochlear implants. Cochlear (Nucleus-24) and Med-el representatives participate in discussions. Advanced Bionics (Clarion) representatives monitor the list and will respond privately to posts.

This discussion group seems to be more for hard-of-hearing and late-deafened adults, many of whom are members of SHHH (Self-Help for Hard of Hearing)

This discussion group has wide participation by many deaf educators and parents of deaf children.

MO-DEAF listserv: To: MO-Deaf-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Mo-Deaf is a list serve for Deaf people in Missouri to discuss things that are happening around the state and to promote involvement in the political process. It is run as a service to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing people of Missouri by the Office of Deaf Services. Anyone can subscribe to Mo-Deaf.
